II. The Cultural Background of Qingming: When a Solar Term Meets a Festival

The Qingming Festival, also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day, is one of China’s four major traditional festivals (alongside the Spring Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, and Mid-Autumn Festival).

1. Historical Origins: The Fusion of Cold Food, Qingming, and Shangsi

Qingming began as one of the 24 solar terms, marking rising temperatures and the “clean and bright” renewal of all things. During the Tang and Song dynasties, it gradually absorbed customs from the “Cold Food Festival” (commemorating Jie Zitui, with a ban on fire and cold meals) and the “Shangsi Festival” (riverside purification and spring outings). This fusion gave rise to today’s unique Qingming tradition, which combines tomb sweeping with spring excursions.

2. Core Meaning: Reverence for the Past Enriches Public Morality

As the Analects of Confucius states: “Pay careful attention to the end of life and continue the remembrance of ancestors; then the virtue of the people will return to fullness.” The essence of Qingming lies in:

Gratitude and Remembranc: By sweeping tombs and making offerings, people express respect for the sources of life and pass down family memories.

Life and Hope: Qingming falls between mid-spring and late spring, when all things grow in a clean and bright environment. Amid their sorrow, people also engage in spring outings, willow planting, and kite flying to embrace the vitality of the season reflecting the Chinese philosophy of “sorrow without self-destruction.”

3. Traditional Customs at a Glance

4. The Modern Qingming: Civilized, Green, and Safe

As times have changed, Qingming has taken on additional contemporary meanings:

Civilized Remembrance: Promoting flower offerings, online memorials, and family remembrance gatherings to reduce pollution from burning.

Safety First: Strictly preventing fires, encouraging off-peak travel, and avoiding crowds.

Statutory Holiday: Since 2008, Qingming has been officially recognized as a national public holiday, becoming a day of shared cultural memory for all Chinese people.
